Many people worry that quiet hand dryers are less powerful and take longer to dry hands effectively. Did you know that Mitsubishi Electric Wave dryers dry hands quietly and use less energy.

The quietest hand dryers available on the market use jets of fast-moving air directed through a narrow nozzle to displace water from the user’s skin and dry their hands quickly and effectively. A question often asked about fast and quiet jet hand dryers is whether they are more efficient, or whether the higher speed airflow they create requires more energy.

The truth is that because of innovative design choices, a jet hand dryer is not only faster than a conventional warm air dryer, but it also uses far less energy to work and creates less disturbance in the surrounding area.

Reasons why jet hand dryers are more efficient

There are three main reasons why jet hand dryers use less energy than competing designs to get better results:

  • More efficient fan systems
  • No need to use a heating element to warm the air
  • Faster operation

More efficient fan systems

The internal aerodynamics of a jet hand dryer use the same principles as an aircraft’s wing to accelerate air out through a narrow nozzle. The internal ducting in the dryer creates differential pressure areas that draw air faster from the fan towards a narrow nozzle where air gets faster as it leaves the dryer.

The use of aerodynamics inside a quiet hand dryer means that less energy is required to move the air, and a more efficient fan can be used.

No heating element

Conventional hand dryers blow slow moving air over a heating element that warms the air and causes water to evaporate off the skin. A jet hand dryer blows water off the surface of the skin and does not need heating.

This means that one of the most inefficient parts of the hand dryer is not used, and as such, much less energy is required as only the fan requires power.

Faster drying times

With a warm air hand dryer, it can take between thirty seconds and a minute for the water on the skin to evaporate fully. By comparison, with a jet hand dryer there is no waiting around and the water is simply blown off the skin in as little as 10 seconds.

This faster drying time means that the fan operates for a much shorter time and uses less energy. With automatic hand dryers that switch on and off when hands are present in the drying area, electricity is only used when drying unlike an older push button dryer which works for a fixed period after the button is pressed whether or not the dryer is being used.

How much energy is saved

The combination of energy saving features designed into ultra-efficient jet hand dryers such as the Mitsubishi Electric Wave u02 mean that it uses considerably less electricity than a conventional warm air design and saves you money as well as reducing carbon emissions.

The annual running costs for an old-fashioned hand dryer used one hundred times each day are approximately £33. By comparison, with the same usage levels, a Mitsubishi Electric Wave hand dryer costs just £10 – less than a third!

In terms of CO2 emissions, the Mitsubishi Electric Wave u02 is responsible for the equivalent of approximately 35 KG annually based on one hundred daily uses, which is significantly less than the 108 kg of CO2 generated by a conventional hand dryer.
