The Correct Number of Hand Dryers for a Building

Building regulations in the UK set out how many hygiene facilities a building should have to provide the right level of access to all users, but when planning and designing these facilities, your choices about the number of hand dryers can also impact usage times and affect the comfort of users.

How many bathrooms should a building have

According to the HSE in the UK (Health and Safety Executive), a building should be equipped with a minimum number of toilet and washing facilities appropriate to the number of people normally in the building.

For mixed use bathrooms:

  • 1 – 5 people need 1 toilet and 1 washbasin
  • 6 – 25 people need 2 toilets and 2 washbasins
  • 26 – 50 people need 3 toilets and 3 washbasins
  • 51 – 75 people need 4 toilets and 4 washbasins
  • 76 – 100 people need 5 toilets and 5 washbasins

For male only bathrooms

  • 1 – 15 men need 1 toilet and 1 urinal
  • 16 – 30 men need 2 toilets and 1 urinal
  • 31 – 45 men need 2 toilets and 2 urinals
  • 46 – 60 men need 3 toilets and 2 urinals
  • 61 – 75 men need 3 toilets and 3 urinals
  • 76 – 90 men need 4 toilets and 3 urinals
  • 91 – 100 men need 4 toilets and 4 urinals

Bathrooms should be positioned on each floor of a building to ensure easy access.

Hand Dryer Mounting Heights for Disabled Users

A common rule of thumb is that there should be a minimum of one hand dryer fitted for every four washbasins, with a minimum of one hand dryer per bathroom in the building.

This means that in a building with one hundred people where there would be a minimum of five washbasins and five toilets in a single mixed-use bathroom, there should be a minimum of two hand dryers to accommodate all users. However, if there were five bathrooms in the building, each with one toilet and washbasin, the building would require five hand dryers to accommodate all users.

The impact of hand dryers on bathroom usage time

A key consideration when planning how many hand dryers a building needs is waiting times in bathrooms. Conventional warm air hand dryers can take up to 30 seconds to fully dry the user’s hands. At busy periods in an office or school such as lunchtime, this can lead to significant delays when people are using the facilities and impact productivity.
