Finding the Best School Hand Dryer

When choosing the best hand dryers for your school, key factors that should be part of your decision include running costs and hygiene, but modern hand dryers can also reduce the amount of disturbance to learning by working quicker and quieter than conventional designs.

Reducing Energy Costs and Environmental Impact

Secondary schools can have as many as a thousand students, which can result in hand dryers being used more than 3,000 times daily during breaks and lunch times.  Over the course of a year, the cost of using paper towels for this many uses can be more than £4,500 and result in more than 9 tonnes of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere.  Ultra-efficient Mitsubishi Electric Wave hand dryers use about a third of the energy of conventional designs, and are responsible for much lower CO2 emissions.  For 3,000 daily uses over the course of a year, the Mitsubishi Electric Wave i01 costs just £144 at typical electricity tariffs, and releases about 5% of the CO2 of paper towels, and less than a third of a conventional dryer.

Improving Hygiene

Germs can spread quickly in school environments, so choosing a no-touch, easy to clean hand dryer is important.  Sensors on the Mitsubishi Electric Wave hand dryers detect when a user’s hands are in the airstream and switch on an off automatically, which means that the user does not need to touch the device to operate it.  Using jets of air to blow the water off the surface of the skin is also more hygienic than a conventional hand dryer that relies on evaporation and can leave a residue on the skin.

Reducing Disruption

Conventional hand dryers are noisy in use which can disturb neighbouring classes.  They are also slow, taking up to 30 seconds to dry the user’s hands fully, which means that they can cause longer mid-lesson breaks, and make bathrooms busy.  The design of the airflow from the Mitsubishi Electric Wave i01 and u02 jet hand dryers creates less turbulence in the air which reduces their sound level to around that of a normal conversation, while a drying time as low as 9 seconds means that less time needs to be spent in the bathrooms to help students spend more time in the classroom.
