School Hand Dryers
Ensuring good hand hygiene amongst pupils is an essential part of helping to stop the spread of germs and infections like COVID 19 and flu in schools. Hand dryers are a key part of the hand washing process, and there are multiple factors for school managers to consider when choosing the best hand dryers for their staff and pupils.
Environment and Sustainability
When choosing the right kind of hand drying solution for school bathrooms, sustainability and environmental impact are often a key part of the decision-making process.
One of the first decisions made is to choose between paper towels and electric hand dryers for schools. Several factors mean that in most cases, paper towels are a less environmentally friendly choice.
Carbon Footprint
The production and disposal of paper towels is highly energy intensive and has a high carbon footprint. Over the course of a year an average school will consume tens of thousands of paper towels as students wash and dry their hands. Each tonne of paper towels requires 17 trees to be cut down and processed in a mill, and harsh chemicals including bleaches are used in the manufacturing process.
In a school with 500 pupils, the use of paper towels generates more than 3.1 tonnes of CO2 emissions in a year.
CO2 emissions from hand dryers are much lower by comparison. For 500 daily uses over the course of a year, the electricity used by a typical wall mounted dryer will generate about 526KG of CO2; a figure that falls to just 160KG with an ultra- efficient model such as the Mitsubishi Electric Wave u02.
